Calls for Sitka Blacktail Deer

While Alaska Specialty Woods is well known for supplying the finest Sitka Spruce instrument tonewood for guitar tops, did you know the company also offers Drop Shot Calls for hunters? In Alaska, when hunters want to find and attract Sitka blacktail deer, they often order doe Bleat sound calls from Alaska Specialty Woods. Made from old growth materials, these handmade Drop Shot Calls are crafted with excellent workmanship and designed to work well for deer hunters.

Deer calling has been around for centuries, but in recent times research has been done that has really helped fine tune deer calls. Back in the 1980s, a man named Larry Richardson wrote his Master’s thesis on the topic of “Acoustics of White-Tailed Deer.” Basically, he studied different aural communications made by whitetails, explaining what each one meant. This report helped draw attention to deer calling in a significant way, such that hunters actively embraced the use of deer calls for their hunts.

Since the 1980s, more research has been done in order to better understand how calling fits into the overall hunting experience. Did you know, for instance, that you can use certain calls to create curiosity, excitement or anger to attract deer to you?

It turns out that deer make specific sounds at certain times. They may grunt, bleat, whine, snort or stomp their feet to communicate with one another. These noises can signify aggression or simply be used to indicate to others nearby, “Hey, I’m here.” Interestingly, deer don’t call that often, so rookie hunters often make the mistake of calling too loud and too often.

Did you know deer have great hearing? They can tell if calls are fake! They’re smart animals. That said, hunters can and do utilize Drop Shot Calls from Alaska Specialty Woods in order to call deer to them.

  1. Greetings. I will be visiting my brother in Ketchikan…shortly in July for a few weeks.

We go Blacktailed Deer hunting in November…for many years now.

Any chance you “sell” your Deer calls at a Retail Shop in Ketchikan?

Please advise…I have many calls…but, one of your “call” is calling me.

    Thanks, Good luck…Mike Emley

Ps: If not…you should stock a few at the Tongass Hardware…the smaller store where they sell guns and ammo.

Lately, the few they sell are very poor quality…have them keep one on display…so people can become more aware of your call…and then look up your website.

    1. My sons can never get ahead of whats ordered/back-ordered, to be able to sell anymore than they can make in their spare time. We work full time producing acoustic soundboard products, that is our mainstay of opperations and revenue. If you want ione, you’ll have to order one and get in line like everyone else that is blessed to receive one or more.
