Sitka Spruce Tonewood FAQ's

Sitka Spruce Tonewood Faq

Sitka spruce is a species of spruce tree native to the Pacific Northwest of North America. It’s one of the most popular tonewoods used for guitar tops due to its unique tonal qualities and strength-to-weight ratio.

Sitka spruce has a combination of strength, lightness, and elasticity. This allows for a broad dynamic range, crisp articulation, and excellent projection, making it particularly favored for guitar tops.

Sitka spruce tonewood provides a direct and clear sound with a balanced tone. It generally has a strong fundamental with less overtone content compared to woods like cedar or redwood. This makes it versatile for various playing styles.

Yes, as Sitka spruce ages, its resonance and tonal complexity can improve, often resulting in a richer, warmer sound.

Sitka spruce is versatile and responds well to a wide range of playing styles. It offers good clarity for fingerstyle players and can handle aggressive strumming, making it suitable for diverse musical genres.

Sitka spruce is sensitive to humidity and temperature changes. It’s essential to store the guitar in a controlled environment and consider using a humidifier or dehumidifier when necessary to prevent warping or cracking.

A tighter grain pattern (more lines per inch) usually indicates a denser wood, which can produce a quicker response and brighter tone. Conversely, a wider grain might result in a slightly warmer sound. However, individual variations in wood mean each piece is unique, and other factors play a role in the final sound.

Absolutely! Many guitars feature Sitka spruce tops paired with different woods like rosewood, mahogany, or maple for the back and sides. Each combination offers a unique tonal palette.

Sitka spruce is generally more affordable compared to some other tonewoods, such as Adirondack spruce or Brazilian rosewood. However, factors like grade, source, age, and treatment can influence its price.

Yes, Sitka spruce is one of the more sustainable choices for tonewood. It’s widely grown in managed forests in the Pacific Northwest, ensuring a consistent supply while maintaining ecological balance.  At Alaska Specialty Woods we use 100% reclaimed wood from fallen trees.

Fantastic quality! I have ordered multiple times and it always exceeds my expectations.
I have been a customer of ASW for several years now and they consistently deliver top quality woods at a good price. Their customer service is outstanding. Brent is always helpful and takes care of his customers like me.
I've been doing business with Brent for a number of years now - best source I know of for spruce - friendly folks, excellent service and great selection!
I ordered a Master Grade torrified top last month and recently began working it. This was my first time purchasing from Alaska Specialty Woods and I must say I was very pleased with the quality of the wood, communication from the seller, and timelines of delivery. I will definitely purchase form ASW again!
Exceptional high quality with a very pleasant personal touch.
The Blue Denim Bear Claw is absolutely stunning with all the desirable attributes exceeding my expectations. This one will most definitely be used for a very special and well planned build.
During my phone conversation with Bret Cole Sr. I left the choice of picking a nice Toredo Worm top for me based on the intended use.
Bret couldn't have done a better job of choosing this top for me. He absolutely nailed it.
In this order I received an Earthtone Red Cedar set as well... nearly without words on this stunning set however if you are considering one of these Earthtone sets do not hesitate. I expected a good set and got a suburb set... extremely happy.
I had never used yellow cedar before and thought I'd give is a go.
Not only is the set I received of very high quality it has the most wonderful aromatic scent to it.
Smells like a dream. Can hardly wait to use it , filling my shop with the aroma.
A very Special well deserving Thank you to Brent and Family for all they do...
Hands down one of my best experiences in 30 + yrs of lutherie.
It's seven years since I first purchased soundboard materials from Alaska speciality woods. The quality of their materials is top class, with tightly packed growth rings, the straightest of grain and perfectly quarter sawn sections.
The exceptionally slow rate of growth as attested to by the tightness of the growth rings indicates a rate of as little as one inch in 25 years; providing a highly desirable stiffness to thickness ratio.
Compare this to similar material of European origin, where typical growth rate per inch of as few as seven years per Inch is common, the exceptional quality of the Alaskan material should be obvious.
To conclude, it is great to deal with people who are passionate about what they do.
Thanks to Brent and family.

My dealings with Brent and the folks at Alaska Specialty Woods has been terrific. They answered my questions quickly and once I placed my order, it was dispatched very quickly. I'm very happy with the tonewood they supplied me, and I'm very happy with their communication and service. Highly recommended.
I discovered ASW relatively recently. I'm a part time guitar maker and I need a good source of wood. My first couple orders have been great. The quality is good and the prices are fair. I want to tread as lightly on the Earth as I can and I really like that I'm now building with salvaged and recovered wood.
I'm an very happy repeat Australian customer for over 7 years of Alaska Speciality Woods. I'm a long time experienced Luthier so I know my tonewoods. Brent Sr and family provide the BEST highest quality & stiffest tonewood you'll find anywhere on this planet, with top quality customer service and communication. I've Never received a dud piece in over 7 years of numerous boxes of tonewood. They really care about high quality tonewood and care about their customers. My fellow Aussie Luthier mates also buy from them and rave about them. You will not be disappointed.
I have placed many orders and am very happy with the product, especially the 2A full, figure bearclaw
The best wood ever for musical instruments
It sucked
Response from the owner:Ikram misunderstood the product and ASW mosunderstood the needs of the project. Ikram thought the harp guitar set was going to be over 22mm thick, when in fact they are only 5mm or less thick. He recieved what he ordered.. And being in another country in the middle east, was way to expensive to return.
