One cannot really grade 16” wide boards as one would 8” wide boards. We cut as wide as we are able from what the log will yield by it’s radius. Only trees with fine texture from sapwood to heart are used for this product.. most trees have very wide grain in the heart with 1/4” or wider growth rings, is usually the case for spruce. Spruce is not a shade tolerant specie and requires lots of sunlight to grow. In old growth forest, a heavy canopy usually prevents spruce from starting and surviving, unless there has been  a clearing event of blow down trees or dying neighbor trees. But every so often over the yrs the majestic sitka spruce gets started and shoots its boughs to the canopy tops, to tower over all the other species of trees.
